Aboriginal Land reform on agendaWritten on the 2 July 2017 WA Aboriginal Affairs Minister Ben Wyatt recently attended a meeting in Broome to discuss land tenure reform and identify land ready for divestment and the beneficiaries. As part of an election commitment to divest the Aboriginal Lands Trust estate, Mr Wyatt met with Aboriginal stakeholders from across the Kimberley, as well as members of the ALT. Their primary objective was to identify land ready for divestment and the organisations to which the it could be divested. The ALT is responsible for managing about 10 per cent of WA's land mass, which is held for the use and benefit of Aboriginal people. Throughout WA, estate assets are being leased or divested in an effort to create sustainable economic opportunities through land reform. Mr Wyatt said the Aboriginal Lands Trust estate was an underused asset. Source: Broome Advertiser |
