Barnett Government accused of being in 'fantasy land' over WA's tanking economy

Barnett Government accused of being in 'fantasy land' over WA's tanking economy West Australian Labor leader Mark McGowan has accused the Barnett Government of living in 'fantasy land' when it comes to the state's economy.

Economists have warned weak growth in the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and a worsening trade deficit could push Australia into recession.

In WA, the Barnett Government continues to cite its preferred measure of economic performance, the Gross State Product, which includes exports, as proof of continued growth.

But State Final Demand, which measures only domestic economy demand has been going backwards since December 2013.

In the September quarter alone, it fell by 3.8 per cent, producing an annual average decline of 6 per cent which Treasury described as 'the largest fall on record'.

WA Labor Leader Mark McGowan said the Barnett Government was out of touch with reality.

"The Government is in a fantasy land. They are in a dream world. There is a domestic recession. There is a jobs crisis," Mr McGowan said.
"That's why we need to do every single thing we can to get West Australian jobs in place."
