Brendon Grylls slams Malcolm Turnbull as 'rank hypocrite' on tax

Written on the 4 March 2017

WA Nationals leader Brendon Grylls has accused Prime Minster Malcolm Turnbull of "rank hypocrisy" for attacking its mining tax proposal while conducting a review of petroleum taxes.

In a scathing speech, which included attacking his partners in government the WA Liberal Party Mr Grylls told business leaders in Perth Mr Turnbull should apologise for criticising his mining tax proposal, which would cost the miners about $3 billion a year.

Mr Grylls wants to lift a mining levy paid by BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto from 25¢ per tonne to $5 per tonne.

"How is it Mr Turnbull that changes to the PRRT (Petroleum Resources Rent Tax), which deliver a new revenue stream to the Commonwealth budget, won't effect jobs and sovereign risk but a change to the 1960s lease rental that is collected by the West Australian government will?," Mr Grylls said.

"Shame on you. [It is] rank hypocrisy that does not befit the Prime Minister."
