Broome Chamber's Melva Stone to present at CCIWA HR Conference

The BCCI is pleased to announce that Member Liaison Melva Stone OAM has been secured as a guest speaker at the CCIWA's forthcoming HR Conference.

Speaking on experience of being an employee out of retirement, Melva will talk about the advantages to business when employing older workers and also the benefits, other than simply income, that older workers are looking for.  

Melva's achievements are too vast to summarise in total, among them establishing RFDS's first professionally-run public relations and fundraising department and WA's first female state president of the RFDS, then its WA Ambassador and Honorary Life Member of the "Flying 1000". In 2009, for her work with the Service, she received the Order of Australia Medal (OAM).

Melva established her own consultancy, Projects Plus, which has worked with numerous non-profit organisations. She established the Australian British Chamber of Commerce in Western Australia and was awarded Honorary Life Membership for her efforts with the organisation.

She has also worked with government as an Ambassador for the Year of the Outback, on the National Committee for Older Australians and as State Chairman for the Rural, Remote and Regional Network and has developed and run a series of training courses for WA local governments.

In 2007 Melva gained the support of Rio Tinto to publish her co-authored book Red Dust in Her Veins, launched in New York to raise money for the RFDS.  It has been turned into a talking book for the blind and a screenplay looms.

She has spoken at conferences worldwide, served on numerous boards and committees and as Ambassador for the RFDS and Honorary Life member of Edith Cowan University's Golden Key Honor Society. Her story was chosen as the first to air on ABC Radio's "Story Catcher" program in 2010. She has begun her second book, Falling Off Rainbows, works in a consultancy role and continues her public speaking and mentoring activities.

Advocating first-hand on the benefits of recruiting older people is the Broome Chamber, who has benefited from Melva's vast skills and experience since she accepted the role of Member Liaison.
