Broome on the cards for Air Asia

Written on the 21 June 2017

Broome on the cards for Air Asia AirAsia could be back in Adelaide again in the not too distant future as the budget international airline increases routes in the region.

Broome is also on the cards for the Malaysia-based carrier that has been flying to Sydney, Melbourne, Darwin, Gold Coast and Perth for almost ten years.

Air Asia Group's chief executive Tony Fernandes said a lot of people have been asking him about restarting in Adelaide, a market they left in 2015.

"We had it, we pulled out of it, but at that time were were a different airline," Fernandes said at the international Paris Air Show on Tuesday.

"Now I think we are in much better shape, so I hope we can do it in the not too distant future."

He ruled out any foray into Australia's "well covered" domestic market, or flying again to Europe where the competition is fierce.

"I think it is much more important to go to Adelaide than London right now," he said.

"There are places begging for more connectivity, and South Australia is one of them.

"Right now there is a bit of a bloodbath going on in Europe, I only want to go into places where we can make a difference."

So Asia's leading low-cost carrier will focus on connecting more places in Asia, as well as new points in Australia, Indonesia and the Philippines.
