Camels, nudists, dogs and cars in Cable Beach legal tangle

Broome's iconic camel rides are headed for a legal tangle over sharing Cable Beach with nudists, dogs and cars.

Riding a camel on north-western Australia's Cable Beach is one of Broome's quintessential tourist experiences.

But the part of Cable Beach where camels traipse, known locally as "north of the rocks", is also very popular among four-wheel-drivers, dog walkers and nudists.

The local shire recently asked camel tour operators to reapply for their licences to operate on the beach, and the cameleers saw this as an opportunity to relocate their operations "south of the rocks", where cars are banned, and activity is mostly limited to swimming and dog-walking.
