CCI flags clash on Kimberley irrigation projects

A Kimberley business group has voiced frustration over contradictions between State Government departments it claims could prevent a big irrigation project from gaining approval.

Malcolm Harris and family, who own Gogo Station, have sought Environmental Protection Authority consent to develop 5000ha of irrigated farmland, plus dams and water-capture channels, internal roads and buildings.

The proposal involves capturing overland water flow in dams and making use of underground reserves, ultimately using 0.7 per cent of the average annual flow of the Fitzroy River. Crops to be grown include sorghum, rice and chia.
