Chinatown - a Broome marina option

The Department of Transport WA is currently considering future water based maritime infrastructure for the Broome area and has invited public comment and proposals.

In 2013, as part of  Broome's 20 Year Strategic Planning exercise, urban design consultant Commonground developed a proposal to re-connect Chinatown with it's maritime legacy by creating a masterplan that featured a marina on the Dampier Creek foreshore.

Following that proposal, Paspaley Properties engaged Commonground to further develop their masterplan to understand more of what this could mean for Chinatown and Roebuck Bay, which is the historical harbour area for the pearling fleet that serviced the pearling industry in Broome from the 1860s onwards.

Nick Hanigan, director of PASPALEY Properties, has explored the vision, concepts and rationale for such a development in line with the Shire's planning rationale.  The key goals are to provide a safe Boat Harbour for the pearling fleet and other small vessels, to provide a small ships repair facility suitable for the numerous vessels servicing the various industries in the region, and to rejuvenate the lifestyle and atmosphere of Chinatown through such a development.
