Fortescue's Twiggy Forrest branches out into oil and gas

Billionaire Andrew Forrest has put himself on a collision course with the vocal anti-fracking lobby, with the Fortescue Metals founder applying for a broad parcel of oil and gas permits across Western Australia's environmentally sensitive Kimberley region.

Mr Forrest's private company Minderoo yesterday said its subsidiary Squadron Energy had partnered with private group Goshawk Energy to apply for more than 220,000 square kilometres of permits or 40 per cent of the Kimberley's Canning Basin, which is considered one of Australia's most promising but least explored oil and gas provinces.
