Greens reattempt derailment of cashless debit card

Yet again the Greens have lodged a disallowance motion in Federal Parliament in an attempt to discontinue the cashless debit card trials in the East Kimberley and Ceduna.

Greens senator Rachel Siewert, who lodged it today, wants to stop the proposed extension of the trials to June.

The cards, which isolate 80 per cent of welfare payments so it can't be spent on alcohol, drugs or gambling, have been used in Ceduna since March last year and April in Kununurra and Wyndham.

The government released a progress report, authored by ORIMA Research, last week and dubbed the trials a success in both communities.

A statement from Human Services minister Alan Tudge said there was a clear "proof-of-concept".
