Japanese Government expresses 'sincere condolences' 75 years after attack on Broome The Japanese Government expressed "sincerest condolences for the countless lives lost" at a ceremony marking 75 years since the air attack on Broome during World War II.

The message was delivered by Japan's deputy head of mission, Takashi Katae, at a sweltering memorial ceremony attended by local and visiting dignitaries, including WA Premier Colin Barnett and Opposition Leader Mark McGowan.

"Japan will never forget that this inflicted immeasurable damage and suffering on Broome and other parts of Australia," Mr Katae said.

The attack on Broome came less than two weeks after the Japanese bombing of Darwin.

Nine zero fighter planes swooped on the remote town, catching flying boats filled with Dutch refugees from Java undefended.
