Jobs for youth: Broome Business Youth Exchange a great success

Hundreds of school leavers from Broome and Derby gathered at the Broome Civic Centre on Friday morning to seek work and training opportunities at the inaugural Broome Business Youth Job Exchange.

The initiative was born from a collaboration between the Broome Chamber's Working Together program with the Aboriginal Workforce Development Centre and Wunan Career Centre.  The intent of the exchange is for employers with real employment opportunities now and in the coming months to share information about those roles with local youth.  It's also hoped that the opportunity would give local youth a valuable chance to establish relationships with local employers and industry.

The event was strongly supported by local businesses with twenty in attendance to present opportunities to the youth, and a further twenty offering expressions of interest for candidates outside of this event.  The businesses were complimented by local support services who used their networks to encouraged youth attendance and made themselves available at the event should training or other needs are identified during conversations.  These service providers included Nirrumbuk Aboriginal Corporation, North Regional TAFE, Nyirrwa Murrgurlayi (Madalah employment related accommodation), Apprenticeships Australia to name a few.

The event was further supported by the Shire of Broome who sponsored the Exchange through in kind support for the Broome Civic Centre whre the event was held.
