Key appointments for Chinatown Revitalisation

The Chinatown Revitalisation Project is rapidly gaining pace with the appointment of two key team members who will oversee vital elements of the project.

The $12.6 million project, made possible by $10 million through Royalties for Regions, $2million from the Shire of Broome and $600,000 from Tourism WA, is being jointly delivered by the Shire, Kimberley Development Commission and LandCorp to increase the level of activity in Chinatown through major improvements to street, landscape, facilities and laneways over the next two years.

Feasibility studies are also being conducted on three projects which have the potential to transform Chinatown and unlock substantial long-term investment, including a cultural centre, Gray Street extension and reconnecting Chinatown to Roebuck Bay.

Following a rigorous selection process, Development Management Group (DMG) was successful with its submission for project management services, to be led by Project Director, Lyle Robertson.

DMG will manage delivery of the overall project, including development and delivery of sub-project plans, designs, tender documentation and reporting, and will oversee the dedicated specialist teams required to complete feasibility studies and due diligence on the three transformational projects.

Local organisation RFF, in conjunction with the Broome Chamber of Commerce and Industry, has been selected as the communications and community engagement consultant, and will develop and implement the communications plan for the overall project, as well as undertake community engagement for the three feasibility projects.

Broome Shire President, Ron Johnston, said the two appointments were vital as the project moved into its implementation phase.

"A project of this size and complexity requires dedicated external resources to properly manage and deliver within the timeframes and budget proposed," Cr Johnston said.

"We're excited to be moving into project delivery, and looking forward to the benefits starting to flow from the project.

"The Shinju Matsuri float parade and mardi gras was a great example of how Chinatown can be brought to life, and we are confident the revitalisation will bring more activity into the heart and soul of Broome."
