Mark McGowan's Labor closes in on victory

Mark McGowan's Labor closes in on victory Labor is within striking distance of defeating Colin Barnett's government at next week's West Australian election, according to an exclusive Fairfax Media poll, despite a preference deal with Pauline Hanson's One Nation aimed at delivering the Liberals a third term.

With the local economy suffering a post mining boom slump, the state-wide poll of 1660 residents conducted by ReachTEL shows Mr Barnett's Liberal-Nationals alliance trailing Labor on a two-party-preferred basis by 48 to 52 per cent.

The result represents a 9 percentage point swing to Labor since the last election in 2013, just shy of the 10-point swing needed to deliver Mark McGowan's Labor the 10 seats he needs to take government in its own right on March 11.

At a minimum, the poll points to a hung parliament.
