Project Sea Dragon settles on location for prawn processing plant near Kununurra The company looking to build one of the world's largest prawn farms on Legune Station in the Northern Territory has settled on a location for its processing plant.

Chris Mitchell, from Project Sea Dragon, said a 52 hectare site within the Department of Agriculture's research station at Kununurra was the preferred location for the plant, and negotiations over water and land use were well underway.

Speaking at a public forum in Kununurra this week, Dr Mitchell said the site had many benefits.

"We spent a lot of time looking for sites around town. We needed the availability of fresh water," he said.

"We thought a lot about traffic coming to and from the farm [on Legune Station].

"So [with this site we've chosen] it's got suitable roads and it's a bit out of town, so it doesn't affect people in town.

"But very much, it was that availability of water and the ability to move water out of the plant."

The fresh water requirement for the plant is about 216 megalitres a year during stage one of the project, increasing to about 874 megalitres a year when the project reaches its full scale.
