Thunderbird: A message from BCCI President

Written on the 11 July 2017

Yesterday Sheffield Resources announced the recruitment of three Kimberley locals to the Thunderbird mineral sands project.  This was delivered alongside a pledge to the community that it is committing to 40 years of responsible mining, environmental and cultural practices among many other important functions of its role in this project and duty to the community.

The Broome Chamber has taken a keen interest in the development of Thunderbird through consultations with both Sheffield and regulatory bodies, and commends Sheffield for the depth of it's consultation process and it's commitment to local employment and procurement.  Sheffield intends that all jobs will go to local residents for operations (no FIFO), and key infrastructure facilities in Broome and Derby would be utilised in the delivery of the project throughout the mine life offering further flow-on employment opportunities.

However, although Thunderbird had been cleared by the National Native Title Tribunal who determined that a Mining Lease can be granted, it's disappointing to hear the project may now be delayed if there is a lengthy appeal process.

Whilst we respect the parties rights under law we hope that the issue can be resolved asap to ensure the benefits of this world class development can quickly flow to the native title holders and the West Kimberley community in general.

Many thanks,

PETER TAYLOR
