Turnbull on education: WA treated very unfairly

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull was in Broome last week for a 1-night visit as part of a 'listening tour' by invitation of Melissa Price.

Addressing the room at a community reception held at the Civic Centre on Thursday, Mr Turnbull gave credit to the work of Melissa Price as federal member for Durack, an electorate which is 64,000 times bigger than his electorate of Wentworth.

The topic of schooling was his headline message, saying that the state of WA had been very unfairly treated in school funding arrangements set up by prior governments.

"We have for the first time in our history ensured we have national transparency in a consistent needs-based school fund leading to a substantial increase in funding to schools in WA."

He referred to new education funding reforms which will see schools across Durack receiving $716m additional federal funding over 10 years, including an extra $75m for Broome schools alone.

"The per-student funding for students at Broome Senior High School will almost double over the next decade," he said.
