WA gas could be piped to the east

WA gas could be piped to the east Gas from offshore Western Australian could be piped to the east coast for the first time when an 890km pipeline to Darwin from off the Kimberley coast is finished as part of the $US37 billion Ichthys LNG development

And the project's operator, Japan's Inpex, says there is the potential for a multibillion-dollar sale of the Ichthys pipeline, the biggest of its type in this hemisphere, once construction of the giant LNG project is finished next year.

The potential to pipe WA gas to the east coast comes amid fears of a looming shortage, with five of six LNG trains now operating at Gladstone's Curtis Island in Queensland and growing restrictions on onshore development in NSW, Victoria and, potentially, the Northern Territory.

Inpex plans to pipe gas from the Inpex field, 220km offshore in the Browse Basin, to an LNG plant in Darwin, where first exports are targeted for next year.
