WA's dinosaur coast: Bid to protect Broome's ancient footprints after maps published research project will reveal for the first time the journeys of enormous dinosaurs up and down the north-western WA coast, prompting debate amongst locals about how the historic site should be both protected and opened up for tourism.

Researcher Steve Salisbury said it was the first time the thousands of footprints have been recorded.

"This is the only window we get on Australia's dinosaurs from more than 130 million years ago," Professor Salisbury said.

"Just their tracks, there's no bones or nothing, so any bit of information we can get out of these footprints are really important for finding out what types of dinosaurs we had back then."
