Proposed Top End prawn farm receives green light from Environmental Protection Authority

The company planning to build Australia's largest prawn farm has received a recommended approval from the Northern Territory's Environment Protection Authority (EPA), to proceed with its first stage of development.

The tick from the EPA is a significant step forward for construction to start on the $1.9 billion Project Sea Dragon at Legune Station, near the WA/NT border.

The proposal for stage one is to construct around 1,100 hectares of grow-out ponds, which are expected to produce 14,000 tonnes of black tiger prawns a year.

NT EPA chairman, Dr Paul Vogel, said after a thorough assessment of the proposal's potential environmental impacts, the EPA believed the proposal could be managed in an environmentally acceptable manner subject to the imposition of 13 recommendations.
